Why Sexuality Education Matters for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities?

Research consistently shows that individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities experience significantly higher rates of sexual abuse and exploitation than their non-disabled peers. Much of this vulnerability stems from a lack of education.

When individuals do not have the language to describe their bodies, do not understand the difference between appropriate and inappropriate touch, and have not been taught about consent, boundaries, and healthy relationships, they are at greater risk.

At the same time, many caregivers, teachers, and even clinicians avoid the topic because they are unsure how to approach it, worried about doing it wrong, or operating under the assumption that individuals with disabilities do not need or want this information.

Our approach is grounded in the belief that every person has the right to sexuality education that is honest, accurate, and delivered in a way they can understand.

Who This Service Is For?

Sexuality education through The Fluency Connection is available for:

• Children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder or other developmental disabilities who are approaching or going through puberty
• Young adults with developmental disabilities who need support with topics like relationships, boundaries, hygiene, consent, and social behavior
• Individuals whose behavior in the area of sexuality is causing concern for caregivers or service providers
• Parents and caregivers who want guidance on how to approach these topics with their child

This service is also available as a consultation for other professionals, schools, and residential programs that need support addressing sexuality-related issues with the individuals they serve.
